Cosmetic dentists are primarily concerned with the appearance of teeth and the smile overall. As such, they are more likely to recommend natural-looking implants over solutions like dentures. A periodontist completes significant training in treating the gums and jawbone. Periodontists typically have additional schooling and clinical experience over a general dentist when it comes to this area of the mouth. An oral surgeon is going to be the most experienced provider when it comes to placing dental implants. Keep in mind that implants are placed surgically and have to be secured to the jawbone. Therefore, visiting a provider who conducts surgery as their mainstay, means the patient is going to be under the care of a physician who has the highest level of expertise. Additionally, many patients need to have a bone graft prior to receiving dental implants and this is something that an oral surgeon must handle.

The choice of who to visit for dental implant surgery is highly personal and depends on several factors. Patients who have had numerous procedures at their general or cosmetic dentist offices may be comfortable visiting them for such an in-depth surgery. Others may be under the care of a periodontist for problems with their gum health. In those cases, it may make sense to continue seeing the same provider.
